A quick online search reveals endless homemade \u2018recipes,\u2019 but few offer real insight into what makes a conditioner safe and effective.<\/p>\r\n<p>So, what exactly is a conditioner?<\/p>\r\n<p>Interestingly, there\u2019s no universal definition. While the mainstream cosmetics industry often defines conditioners as emulsions containing <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/natural-surfactants\/\">cationic surfactants<\/a> (conditioning ingredients that have a positive charge), this is just one approach. This overview will hopefully give you a clearer understanding of how these products work, and how you can start formulating your own safe, effective, natural hair conditioners.<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"green\">1. If you&#8217;d like to learn how to make an emulsion, check out our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/diploma-in-organic-skincare-formulation\/\">Diploma in Organic Skincare Formulation<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Because a traditional conditioner is typically used as a rinse-off product, the water phase will consist of <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/difference-between-distilled-and-deionized-water\/\">distilled water<\/a> or a water-based botanical ingredient. The oil phase will generally not be greater than 10% of the final formulation.<\/p>\r\n<p>In cosmetic formulation, ingredients are grouped into phases based on how they behave and how they need to be mixed. In the case of an emulsion (a cream-based product, like a conditioner), the water phase includes water-soluble ingredients \u2013 such as distilled water or water-based extracts \u2013 and forms the base of your formulation. The oil phase contains your oils, butters, and <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/organic-natural-emulsifiers\/\">emulsifiers<\/a> and forms the other half of your formulation.<\/p>\r\n<p>The base of a typical rinse-off conditioner formulation also includes something called a <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/natural-surfactants\/\">cationic surfactant<\/a>. This is just a term for a conditioning ingredient that has a positive charge. Because your hair has a slightly negative charge, the two are naturally attracted to each other, like magnets.<\/p>\r\n<p>This helps the conditioner stick to your hair, coating each strand. As a result, it smooths the hair, reduces frizz and static, and makes it softer and easier to comb.<\/p>\r\n<h3 class=\"green\">2. Active ingredients<\/h3>\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-73268\" src=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients.png 1080w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients-819x1024.png 819w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients-672x840.png 672w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients-1038x1298.png 1038w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients-480x600.png 480w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Active-ingredients-300x375.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>A natural and organic conditioner is never \u2018just\u2019 an emulsion with a cationic surfactant \u2013 it will also contain ingredients to help moisturise and make the hair easier to comb.<\/p>\r\n<p>Some examples of active ingredients include:<\/p>\r\n<h4>Proteins<\/h4>\r\n<p>Proteins in conventional hair conditioners are broken down into smaller components, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/natural-peptides\/\">peptides<\/a> and amino acids, which attach themselves to the hair strand and help smooth the cuticle. This process strengthens the hair strand and repairs existing damage.<\/p>\r\n<p>Similar to cationic surfactants, proteins are washed out of the hair when you next use a shampoo or cleansing product. They do not permanently attach themselves to the hair strand.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Moisturising ingredients &#8211; Humectants<\/h4>\r\n<p>Many conditioners contain <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/natural-humectants\/\">humectants<\/a> whose purpose is to attract moisture. Examples of organic ingredients include panthenol, glycerin, and <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/cosmetic-guide-hyaluronic-acid\/\">hyaluronic acid<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>These ingredients are not very effective in (fast) rinse-off products because they are not in contact with the hair strand for long enough to have a lasting effect. However, in a leave-in conditioner, they can help to moisturise the hair strand and provide an overall nourishing effect to the conditioner.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Botanical extracts<\/h4>\r\n<p>There are several botanical extracts which are thought to strengthen hair growth by stimulating the skin of the scalp.<\/p>\r\n<p>Although scientific information on the effects of such botanical extracts is limited, they have been used for millennia to aid the lustre, colour and growth of the hair. That\u2019s why we use functional ingredients to perfect the overall conditioner formulation. Examples of <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/guide-to-skincare-ingredients\/\">functional ingredients<\/a> include:<\/p>\r\n<h4>Emulsifiers and thickeners<\/h4>\r\n<p>Thickeners are ingredients that give structure and increase the viscosity of your conditioner emulsion. After all, if your conditioner was very runny, then it would be very challenging to apply.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Colourants<\/h4>\r\n<p>Mainstream hair conditioners often look white and glossy because standard conditioners usually contain a base of cetearyl alcohol and a cationic surfactant. While this gives conditioners a nice, sleek uniform look, they can lack inspiration and creativity.<\/p>\r\n<p>Organic formulators, on the other hand, do not subscribe to these limits, as you can see in this post:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/manifesto-ditching-boring-white-skincare\/\">A manifesto for ditching boring white skincare<\/a><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>If you want to add colour to your organic conditioners (and we recommend you do!), try adding some natural colourants, such as these ones:<\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/38-natural-colourants-skincare\/\">38 natural colourants for organic skincare<\/a><\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<h4>Fragrances<\/h4>\r\n<p>In organic conditioners, we typically use essential oils to provide scent and also to fragrance the hair.<\/p>\r\n<p>As conventional conditioners are generally rinse-off products, the amount of essential oil you use in a conditioner formulation will generally not exceed 1%. Remember to always refer to your supplier&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/guide-safety-data-sheets\/\">safety data sheets<\/a> (SDS) and comply with dermal limits.<\/p>\r\n<h4>Stabilising agents<\/h4>\r\n<p>Finally, any conditioner formulation should, of course, contain stabilising agents to ensure that the formulation remains safe, stable and sellable for the duration of its shelf life.<\/p>\r\n<p>Examples include pH modifiers, chelating agents and preservatives.
