Emulsifiers are used to mix oils and water, creating either oil-in-water (O\/W) emulsions or water-in-oil (W\/O) emulsions. <em>O\/W emulsifiers<\/em> help disperse oil droplets in water, while <em>W\/O emulsifiers<\/em> work the other way around, dispersing water droplets in oil. An oil-soluble preservative<\/h4>\n<p>You can use a solubiliser to dissolve\/disperse a lipophilic (oil-soluble) <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/natural-preservatives\/\">preservative<\/a>. I&#8217;ve conducted a small experiment to show you how to solubilise an oil-soluble preservative in water.<\/p>\n<p>Here, I&#8217;ve used Kem Nat (<a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/inci-explained\/\">INCI<\/a>: Benzyl Alcohol (and) Glyceryl Caprylate (and) Glyceryl Undecylenate) as our preservative. In all our examples, I&#8217;m using Sepiclear G7 (INCI: Heptyl Glucoside) as our solubiliser. Sepiclear G7 is a natural, <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/beauty-brand-certification\/\">COSMOS-certified<\/a> solubiliser that doesn&#8217;t create foam.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve used it in the following preservative-to-solubiliser ratios (from left to right): 1:1; 1:2; 1:3.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-70563\" src=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-672x504.jpg 672w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-1038x779.jpg 1038w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Preservative-1-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/>In this image, you can see that at 1:1 the solution presents a milky aspect. At 1:2, the solution looks more translucent but is not very clear yet. At 1:3, the solution looks almost clear and is a bit translucent.<\/p>\n<p>Although it is not entirely clear, it is homogenous and doesn&#8217;t separate. Therefore, 1:3 is the optimal ratio for this preservative.<\/p>\n<h4>2. Essential oil or a fragrance oil<\/h4>\n<p>You can also use a solubiliser to disperse an essential oil or a fragrance oil, such as peppermint oil, used in the example below.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve used the following ratios of essential oil to solubiliser (from left to right): 1:2; 1:5; 1:10.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-70527 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-672x504.jpg 672w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-1038x779.jpg 1038w, https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Essential-oil-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here, you can see that at 1:2 the peppermint essential oil didn&#8217;t fully solubilise and the solution presents a milky aspect with some oil floating on top. At 1:5 the solution is more homogenous but still opaque, with a few essential oil droplets floating. At 1:10, the essential oil solubilises completely and the solution is clear.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, 1:10 is the optimal ratio for this solubiliser and essential oil.<\/p>\n<h4>3. An oil-soluble vitamin<\/h4>\n<p>You can also use a solubiliser to disperse an oil-soluble vitamin in water, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/formulabotanica.com\/antioxidants-in-cosmetics\/\">vitamin E.<\/a> In this example, I&#8217;ve used vitamin E diluted at 70% in sunflower oil.<\/p>\n<p>Since vitamin E is heavier than essential oils, I don&#8217;t expect the solubiliser to form a completely clear solution. At 1:2 you can see some oil floating and at 1:5 some of the oil settles to the bottom.<\/p>\n<h4>4. Same as with vitamin E, the solution is opaque, but at 1:10 it is homogenous and doesn&#8217;t separate. And why is it so important to use the right ratio?<\/p>\n<p>First of all, if you don&#8217;t use a solubiliser, you&#8217;ll have a layer of oil floating on top of your water-based formulation.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does it not only look nice, but it may also result in functional and safety issues. While overdosing vitamin E isn&#8217;t as serious, overdosing vitamin A is. It&#8217;s better to be safe than sorry.<\/td>\n<td>Your customer will not benefit from the functional properties of the lipophilic vitamins you\u2019ve chosen for your product.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Importance of a solubiliser<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, you need to use a solubiliser, and in the right ratio as well. In case of an overdose, you\u2019re increasing the risks of an allergenic reaction or sensitisation. In case of an under-dose, you might not benefit from the functional properties of the ingredients you\u2019ve chosen for your product.*<\/p>\n<p>*Don\u2019t be alarmed by reading the word \u201chazards.\u201d Most essential oils have allergenic components (benzyl alcohol, linalool, limonene, etc) and hence have maximum dermal limits for their usage in skin and hair care formulations.<\/p>\n<p>Adhering to these dermal limits during formulation is not only a safe practice, it is mandatory in many parts of the world.
